Dear Editor:
As I daily observe the chaos and rising fascism that are happening in the United States,
I’m wondering how many people who voted for Trump are regretting their decisions.
Are they surprised by his illegal tariffs that are sending the prices of many goods
through the roof? Did they really believe he would lower the price of groceries? Are
they satisfied with his cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants by ICE thugs,
wearing masks, who are violating the due process rights that are guaranteed to ALL by
our Constitution. Low-income families, including millions of children, are victims of a
government shutdown perpetrated by the majority Republican Party because they were
determined to extend tax credits to their billionaire friends who also do the bidding of the
president. Health care premiums skyrocket for millions of people who will not be able to
afford health insurance. Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are on the chopping
block. While federal employees who offer essential services are fired by the thousands
for no good cause, the east wing of the White House is in shambles as this man plans
his ballroom. (Really? A ballroom?) He is using funds donated to the cause by, you
guessed it, his billionaire friends who are profiting from his corrupt policies. He lives in
the People’s House; it does not belong to him, and contrary to what he seems to
believe, one day he will be moving out. (I’d like to think his new home will be a jail cell,
but I digress.) In the minds of many, pictures of the demolition have become a symbol
for the wreckage caused by this administration based on its Project 2025 plan.
Republicans were not shy about boldly publicizing this document ahead of the election
so Americans would know what they planned to do. Did voters not believe them? Did
they even read the plan? If they did, and voted for Trump anyway, it must mean they
agreed with it. And yet, many of these folks call themselves Christians. Help me out
here. Something about this doesn’t compute.
Democracies promise life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to all citizens, not just the
privileged. The fight has been long, and it is not over. Continue to show up in large
numbers to raise your voices in protest, write letters, call your Senators and
Representatives to stand up for those in need, support our neighbors who are under
siege, and help defend immigrants who belong here legally, and who have done so
much to make this country what it is. We can stop the madness while we fight to recover
what’s left of our democracy. AND make it stronger. We the People!
Sincerely,
Marian T. Call
